Nominate a Seminole County Teacher: Harrell & Beverly Is Giving $1,000 to an Educator Making a Difference
After receiving more than 200 nominations, the Sanford auto shop has expanded the program to award an additional $500 to a runner-up.
Harrell & Beverly Transmissions & Auto Repair is celebrating Seminole County’s public school teachers with a meaningful back-to-school initiative. In partnership with JASPER Engines & Transmissions, the locally owned shop is awarding $1,500 in classroom supplies to two deserving educators.
Originally set to award $1,000 to a single teacher, Harrell & Beverly increased their contribution after an overwhelming community response. Now, a runner-up will also receive $500 in supplies.
“I grew up in Seminole County and spent my school years in our public system, in elementary, middle, and high school, so I know firsthand how much of a difference a great teacher makes,” said Nelson Beverly, co-owner of Harrell & Beverly. “When we read through these nominations we were overwhelmed by the heart and dedication being poured into classrooms every day. We knew we had to do more.”
Nelson and Lloyd Beverly, fourth-generation owners of the auto repair shop on 25th Street, both attended Pinecrest Elementary, Lakeview Middle (now Millennium Middle), and Seminole High School. Their mother, Melynda Beverly, was a longtime Seminole County educator, and the brothers credit their upbringing, education, and faith for shaping the values they carry into their business. Lloyd also graduated from Seminole State College, known then as Seminole Community College, after completing the automotive program. Nelson’s wife and Harrell & Beverly marketing director, Christina, is a graduate of Lake Brantley High School. Additionally, one of the shop’s current technicians, Carson, is a graduate of Crooms Academy of Information Technology, adding yet another meaningful connection to the Seminole County school system.
All supplies will be purchased directly from each teacher’s wishlist, with everything from books and basic supplies to creative materials and learning tools, so every dollar goes exactly where it’s needed.
Since launching the campaign, Harrell & Beverly has received over 220 nominations, each telling its own story:
One nomination shared the story of a music teacher who creates a space that is “not only a place to learn, but a home.” He coaches students after hours, helps them apply to colleges, and fosters an environment where every student can thrive, no matter their background or resources.
Another came from someone who described an educator returning to teach at the same elementary school she once attended as a student. While pursuing a master’s degree, she also personally funds classroom celebrations and an awards ceremony to honor her school community.
One middle school teacher was recognized for sponsoring a large student service organization, all while creating leadership opportunities and running a reading support program. Her nominator noted that she works nights and weekends, often funding students' needs herself, and is even running a major marathon this fall to support children's health.
Many of the nominations share how teachers are quietly meeting needs far beyond the classroom. Some keep snacks, hygiene supplies, or spare clothing on hand for students in need. Others send food home for the weekend to make sure children don’t go hungry or teach practical life skills (like how to safely use a microwave) so students living in hotels or vehicles can eat a warm meal. These stories speak to the extraordinary compassion, resilience, and creativity that Seminole County teachers bring to their work every day.
Nominations remain open through July 27, and the winners will be announced on July 30, 2025.
